“Phantom of the Opera” Returns to Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour for 2026

Launching global celebrations for the musical’s 40th anniversary
27th March to 26th April, 2026 | Sydney, Australia
This Spring, The Phantom of the Opera will return to the spectacular outdoor stage of Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour, launching global celebrations for the musical’s 40th anniversary. Opening night on 27th of March will mark four decades since the production’s West End premiere in 1986. The timing is especially significant, as 2026 also marks Opera Australia’s 70th anniversary, a landmark year for the company.
It’s a vision that speaks to the core of the International Foundation of Arts and Culture (IFAC) and its Chairman Dr Haruhisa Handa’s belief: bring world-class performance into public view, and let the arts meet people where they are.
Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour began in 2012, when Dr Handa and former Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini brought to life a vision of opera performed on the water, under the stars. What began as a daring idea has become one of the world’s most visually memorable cultural events, transforming the harbour into a floating stage framed by the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and the city skyline.
The Phantom of the Opera first appeared on this stage in 2022, capturing global attention—and making headlines when Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber attended opening night and later surprised audiences by DJ’ing at the after-party. Its success left a lasting impression and paved the way for its return in 2026.
The new production will again be directed by Simon Phillips and designed by Gabriela Tylesova. Audiences can expect the full orchestral sound rising from beneath the stage, fireworks reflected on the water, and the familiar drama of the chandelier, the Phantom’s underground lair, and the music that has moved audiences for generations.
A global phenomenon celebrates four decades:
Since its debut in London, The Phantom of the Opera has captivated more than 160 million people. It has been performed in over 205 cities across 58 countries and translated into 21 languages: a legacy the 2026 harbour season will celebrate on one of the world’s most iconic outdoor stages.
Former Opera Australia CEO Simon Militano shared:
“We’re honoured to play such a key role in the global 40th anniversary celebrations of this legendary musical. 2026 is also Opera Australia’s own 70th anniversary, making this event even more meaningful. Our staging on Sydney Harbour, paired with the gothic romance and unforgettable music of Phantom, will create an experience that showcases the very best of Opera Australia.”
